“He asked himself what is a woman standing on the stairs in the shadow, listening to distant music, a symbol of. If he were a painter he would paint her in that attitude. Her blue felt hat would show off the bronze of her hair against the darkness and the dark panels of her skirt would show off the light ones. Distant Music he would call the picture if he were a painter.”

I reread this story yesterday – it is very fitting for this time of the year when we remember the dead.

I love this. And, I love Joyce. Well, particularly his short stories. Although I was never able to finish Ulysses. I made it about half way. Jung’s commentary on it makes me feel a bit better. If even HE fell asleep while reading it…and he’s Jung! Thanks again!

I’ve never read Ulysses, either, but I haven’t lost hope. The Dubliners were a great collection, though.
