Self-deception and Self-knowledge

Self-deception is a defining part of our human nature. By recognizing its various forms in ourselves and reflecting upon them, we may be able to disarm them and even, in some cases, to employ and enjoy them. This self-knowledge opens up a whole new world before us, rich in beauty and subtlety, and frees us not only to take the best out of it, but also to give it back the best of ourselves, and, in so doing, to fulfil our potential as human beings. I don’t really think it’s a choice.
Neel Burton, Hide and Seek: The Psychology of Self-Deception

People will do anything, no matter how absurd, to avoid facing their own souls.
C.G. Jung

Strange how we not only deceive ourselves but we project this deceptive self on everybody else around us. Wonderful quote.

    • For me it was astrology that helped me to recognize which parts of my self I am denying, rejecting or not living. Always work in progress. Amazing how around some people our true selves can shine unhindered.

  5. Both quotes are riveting, Monika. How was the rest of the book by Neel Burton? And do you recall which of Jung’s works offered the quote pulled? I’m beginning a sabbatical in meditation and writing. I would love to support the meditation with some Jung. Any suggestions?

    • Donna, Burton’s book is quite good, it is actually a good summary of psychoanalytic defense mechanisms, what we do to fool ourselves, basically. My progressed Moon is entering Scorpio this week and I feel I am in need to analyze myself and all the lies I have been telling myself. Jung’s quote comes from Memories, Dreams, Reflections – his autobiography, which I have read more than once and loved each time.

      • Thank you much, Monika. There is something of self-truth in the air. Scorpio progressed Moon is an excellent vibration for deeply going within and cleaning out what is no longer needed. May that process be luminous and creative!

My journey within will begin with meditation, solitude, and not much food. Two images are in my mind: a dakini whose dance is meditation and awareness, and Jesus from “The Last Temptation of Christ” drawing a circle and stepping in.

  6. People can be so competitive when it comes to illusions. “My illusion is better than your illusion.” How would I know? I only know that my delusions are such rich illusions.
